The Love Reset Method

Imagine you can talk about everything again. Even about the things that hurt.

The Love Reset Method is a couples counselling approach developed by Meryem Erkan. Couples learn to talk about difficult topics without it escalating. The new way is practised directly in the sessions until it becomes a habit. Most couples need four sessions.

Sessions take place online from Dubai, in English, German and Turkish.

Understanding alone does not change a relationship.

Many couples have long known that communication, respect and understanding matter. But as soon as a conflict arises, they fall back into the same patterns.

This is exactly where the Love Reset Method comes in. With a structured, practical counselling approach, I help couples recognise stuck communication patterns, develop new ways of dealing with each other and practise them directly in our sessions.

Because change does not come from insight alone, but from what you do differently in everyday life.

Why this method exists

In counselling, the same course of events shows up again and again. A couple describes a problem, it gets discussed, there is a good solution. Four weeks later the same two people are sitting there with a new topic that feels surprisingly familiar.

That is a sign that the work is happening in the wrong place.

What keeps couples stuck is not the topic. It is a sequence that plays out between them and that neither of them ever chose. She moves closer, he steps back. She becomes clearer, he goes quiet. And both are doing exactly what, from their point of view, is meant to save the situation.

Then there is what almost all advice overlooks. “Put yourself in your partner’s shoes during an argument.” “Take a deep breath first.” That sounds right, and in the moment you would need it, you cannot call it up. By then it is far too late.

That is why I work the other way round. You practise beforehand, so that something is actually available in a conflict. And so that the argument itself already plays out more gently, instead of having to be repaired in an emergency.

The three building blocks

First: making the sequence visible.

In the first session we do not work on your last argument, but on what is the same in all your arguments. Who does what when the other does what.

That sounds simple, and it is the moment when most couples have the same picture in front of them for the first time. From this point on there is no one to blame any more. There is a circle, and two people are part of it.

Second: the level underneath.

In conflicts, people rarely speak from the stance in which they see themselves. You notice it when a sentence that was meant harmlessly sets off something in the other person that does not fit the situation.

Making this level visible changes conversations faster than any help with wording. This is the part of my work that differs most clearly from classic couples counselling.

Third: practising, not nodding.

You learn a fixed sequence for conversations that are meant to get through. It is built so that it also works when you are stirred up. Something that only works in calm moments is of no use to anyone.

This is not practised as homework, but with me in the room. You talk to each other, not about yourselves to me. I interrupt when it tips, and I do it at the very moment it tips. That is the part that no book, no podcast and no AI can do.

Where the method comes from

This calls for an honest word.

The Love Reset Method is based on established approaches from communication and relationship psychology. I did not invent these approaches. I know them from science, because I taught for three years in counselling research at the University of Cologne.

What makes my work distinctive is something else: the combination of these approaches, the order in which I use them, the way they are adapted to what couples can actually put into practice in everyday life, and the fact that everything is practised directly in the session.

This grew out of eight years of practice, not at a desk. And it is the reason I do not offer a collection of methods, but a path.

How the four sessions work

Session 1. We find your sequence and give it a name. You go home with a picture you both share, and with an agreement for the next argument.

Session 2. The level underneath. We look at the stance each of you speaks from, and at the point where they cross.

Session 3. The sequence for difficult conversations, practised on your real topics. Not on examples.

Session 4. We take the situation that escalates most reliably for you and go through it together. Afterwards it is clear what you will keep working on.

Many couples go on to book more sessions. That is not a necessary part of the path, but a decision you make at the end of the fourth session.

How you start

First you book just a single video session.

This matters to me. Couples counselling only works if it fits between the three of us, and that cannot be promised in advance. After the first session you decide whether you want to do the four sessions.

The counselling takes place in video sessions. That means it does not matter where you live, and you save yourselves the journey.

Who the method is for

  • For couples who have been having the same argument for months or years.
  • For couples who have drifted apart and do not know where to start.
  • For couples where he shuts down and she can no longer reach him.
  • For couples where everything has shifted since the birth of a child.
  • For couples from two family cultures. In German, Turkish and Southern European families, two ideas often collide: about what respect means and about how much closeness is normal. That sits at the table in every conflict, and it needs to be talked about, not skipped over.

The Love Reset Method is explicitly a method for couples. Both of you take part.

If you want to work on your own part alone, that is something different and just as valid. For that there is INNER RESET™ PRIVATE, my 1:1 mentoring for women.

Who the counselling is not suitable for

  • In cases of physical or verbal violence
  • In cases of systematic belittling, control or isolation
  • If the decision to separate has already been made and is only meant to be confirmed
  • For issues that need psychotherapeutic treatment

Where there is violence, protection and safety come first: the “Violence against Women” helpline (in Germany) can be reached on 116 016 around the clock, free of charge and anonymously. More information

What you will not get from me

I will not tell you whether you are right for each other.

I will not make that decision for you. But I will show you what is happening between you and what would need to change.

I am not looking for someone to blame.

Your pain has room here. But the question of who started it, or who was right more often, will not get you anywhere.

I do not promise you that you will stay together.

After four sessions you understand what you are stuck in, and you know concrete ways to interrupt your pattern. What you make of it is up to you.

“Usually there is enough love. What is missing is a different way of treating each other.”

The name

Why Reset?

A reset does not erase your story. Your love stays. Your years together stay.

What gets reset is the way you treat each other. The way you talk, the way you argue and the way you find your way back to each other afterwards.

Today and after Love Reset

Where you are today. And where it can go.

TodayAfter Love Reset
You think three times about how to say something. And it still ends in an argument. You say what is on your mind. And he listens.
He shuts down, you get louder. You stay in the conversation, even when it gets hard.
You swallow a lot just to keep the peace. You no longer have to swallow anything.
After an argument, there is radio silence for days. You quickly find your way back to each other.
You take care of the children, the appointments and everyday life. But hardly of each other any more. You feel like two people who have chosen each other again.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the Love Reset Method?

A structured counselling approach over four sessions that starts not with the topic of the argument but with the recurring sequence behind it. Developed by Meryem Erkan from eight years of practice.

How many sessions does it take?

Four. First you book just a single video session to see whether it is a good fit. Then you decide.

When will we notice something?

Most couples notice something after the first session, because for the first time both have the same picture of their dynamic. For a new way of doing things to hold up under pressure takes several months.

What makes the method different from classic couples counselling?

Two things. It is not only discussed but practised in the session until a new sequence takes shape. And the work happens on the level where conversations cross, not only on the words.

My partner is sceptical. Can it still work?

Yes. Scepticism is normal. It is a different matter if one of you has already decided to leave.

Is the method also for women on their own?

No, it is only for couples. For women who want to work on their own part alone, there is INNER RESET™ PRIVATE, my 1:1 mentoring.

Does the counselling take place online?

Yes, in video sessions. So it does not matter where you live.

Do you also work with couples from different cultures?

Yes, and that is an explicit part of the work. For many couples, different family cultures explain a large part of their conflicts.

The first session is the easiest step. You decide everything else afterwards.
